PITTSBURGH GLASS CENTER
PITTSBURGH — A culmination of her months-long residency at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, artist Lauren Kalman's upcoming exhibition, To Hold..., features a collection of glass vessels and bronze tools. These bronze tools are crafted from castings of her body, shaped in segments, and designed to work together to represent the movement of the body’s joints. Collaborating with multiple assistants, Kalman orchestrates the castings to collectively operate like a human-scale puppet in the hot shop, cradling the glass vessels. The meticulously controlled shape of the vessel is transformed by the imprint of the body, leaving both a permanent distortion of the original form and a lasting mark of the absent body. The transparency of the glass suggests a void or absence, creating space for loss.
