.\ What We WearJuly 21 - August 27, 2023
There is nothing new in the idea of what we wear saying something about who we are; for millennia, a choice of adornment has signified status, self, and or presence. However, in Caroline Broadhead, Lin Cheung, and Christopher Thompson Royds' practices, it is a theme that also becomes explorative, questioning, and sometimes playful.
Broadhead’s “Seams,” 1990 are objects neither fully 2d nor 3d, the outlines of garments some seen only by intimates, others used as protective layers. A badge or pin used to express affiliations is deconstructed in Chueng’s “Delayed Reactions -Dismantled Flag,” 2017. Thompson Royds Daisy Chain series evokes memories of childhood and perhaps our first interactions with adornment.
All three artists were trained in jewelry in the UK, and material and process are central to all three of their practices. This exhibition gives a glimpse of ideas from an island on the edge.
